Lots of great things happening at the Squirrel this weekend!

On Friday, October 14, 7pm: Come watch COINTELPRO 101--a 56-min. documentary about the government program called COINTELPRO. Claude Marks, the director, will be on hand for Q&A.

On Saturday, October 15, 9AM-Noon: Take Back the Land Rochester is having a PANCAKE and WAFFLE brunch! Come out and support them! Sliding scale donation welcome.

Finally, on Sunday, October 16, from 4PM-6PM: Jessica and Cal will be presenting TRANS 101/Anti-Transphobia Workshop! Many people, including those who run in activist/anti-oppression circles, are largely entirely unaware or only peripherally aware of transgender issues. As a result, many trans* people feel alienated from these communities, even though, logically, it seems we should all be standing together in solidarity to end ALL forms of oppression.

COINTELPRO 101:

What:  Cointelpro 101: Film Screening/ Discussion with the Director Claude Marks

COINTELPRO may not be a well-understood acronym but its meaning and continuing impact are absolutely central to understanding the government’s wars and repression against progressive movements. COINTELPRO represents the state’s strategy to prevent movements and communities from overturning white supremacy and creating racial justice. COINTELPRO is both a formal program of the FBI and a term frequently used to describe a conspiracy among government agencies—local, state, and federal—to destroy movements for self-determination and liberation for Black, Brown, Asian, and Indigenous struggles, as well as mount an institutionalized attack against allies of these movements and other progressive organizations.

COINTELPRO 101 is a 56-minute educational film that will open the door to understanding this history. This documentary will introduce viewers new to this history to the basics and direct them to other resources where they can learn more. The intended audiences are the generations that did not experience the social justice movements of the sixties and seventies.

TRANS 101/Anti-Transphobia Workshop

Sunday, October 16 · 4:00pm - 6:00pm

Flying Squirrel Community Space
285 Clarissa St.
Rochester, NY

Many people, including those who run in activist/anti-oppression circles, are largely entirely unaware or only peripherally aware of transgender issues. As a result, many trans* people feel alienated from these communities, even though, logically, it seems we should all be standing together in solidarity to end ALL forms of oppression.

In this workshop, our goals will be:
1) To break down cis-centric models of thinking about gender/sex.
2) Share our knowledge of transgender history, terminology, etiquette, and issues (legal, medical, economic, and social).
3) Discuss ways in which we can understand and unpack cis privilege and take direct steps to create community spaces that are more inclusive toward trans* and gender-nonconforming people.

We will have time for questions and open discussion.

We'll also have some snacks/refreshments!
